MURPH 2024

  MURPH '24

Memorial day is a holiday that many still may confuse with Veterans day. Although we should still remember and thank veterans on this day. (Along with every day) this day is specifically set aside for those who gave their lives so that our country may flourish!

We MUST make a profound effort on this day to REMEMBER those who have given everything they have to this country and recognize their families had to make. Some families lost brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and grandparents and today is the day that we thank those families for allowing their kin to serve our great nation!

One way that many around the country try to honor those we have lost is by completing the MURPH challenge, this workout is dedicated in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2005. More on Lt. Murphy here.

MURPH

For time:

1 Mile Run

100 Pull-ups

200 Push-ups

300 Air Squats

1 Mile Run

In true fashion this workout should be done in order with a 20lb weighted vest on. However, many will start and end with the mile and break up the pull-ups, push-ups and air squats as they see fit. This is about doing YOUR best, HOW strict can you make your push-ups, pull-ups and air squats!

This is the second year that we have hosted MURPH in Rhinelander. What an AWESOME job by our athletes to get out on this beautiful day and sacrifice some time and go through some pain in order to remember and HONOR those who died for us and our freedoms. We had a staggering 24 athletes compete this year!!! Last year we had 9, HUGE props to these kids for doing what is HARD! They will be GREAT not only as athletes but as citizens of our country because they are willing to do things like this!

Multiple high schools across the state have taken up this challenge too and it's a great way to get EVERYONE in a community involved in honoring the fallen heroes of our nation. Wisconsin Rapids and Appleton East high schools have a strong tradition of getting their athletes and community out to complete this workout.

In true fashion I completely forgot to take a Pre-MURPH picture, HOWEVER I did remember to get times, a Post-MURPH picture and we have a new special tradition starting this year for the champions club! We award one male and female a champion of the week, this isn't about who 'won' the workout. (If you show up and do these workouts you've already won!) It's about recognizing the great things these athletes do during the week and the school year! More info on our Instagram page! LINK!

As for other girls coming back; Violet Biolo, Kayla Skubal, Kail Skubal, Hazel VanCamp, June Chiamulera, Shyanne Hueckstaedt, and Kara Monk. These boys will look to their peers for help in finding some first place team finishes and a push for a state title. Across the wt classes the boys return lots of talent, one notable senior coming back is Bo Stott who suffered a torn ACL during football and will be a big boost the the boys team next year.
